What is Double Opt-In?
Double opt-in (DOI) adds a verification step to email signups. After a user submits the form, your ESP sends a confirmation email — only after they click the link inside are they added to the live list. The trade-off: ~10–25% don't confirm (you lose them), but the remaining list is fully verified, real, and engaged. DOI is legally required or strongly recommended in the EU (GDPR), Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and most of LATAM. It's also the gold standard for inbox deliverability — providers like Gmail reward DOI lists with better placement.
Why it matters for creators
Sender reputation is the single biggest deliverability factor. A 1% bounce rate spike from fake/typo emails can land your whole list in spam folders. DOI prevents that. For EU creators, DOI is also a legal requirement under GDPR.
How it works
- 1User submits the opt-in form.
- 2ESP sends a 'Confirm your subscription' email.
- 3User clicks the confirmation link.
- 4User is added to the active list — and welcome sequence fires.
- 5Unconfirmed users sit in a pending state and get cleared after 7–14 days.
Examples
- ConvertKit, Beehiiv, MailerLite all support DOI toggles.
- EU newsletter operators legally enforce DOI.
- B2B newsletters use DOI to keep open rates >40%.
Common mistakes
- Confirmation email landing in spam (use a recognized sender domain).
- Boring 'click to confirm' email — adds friction.
- No reminder if user doesn't confirm within 24h.
- Disabling DOI to chase vanity list-size growth.
