What is Usage Rights?
Usage rights are a license — you keep the copyright, the brand pays for a defined window of reuse. Without a usage clause, your content stays yours and the brand can only repost organically. Add 'paid usage' or 'whitelisting' and the same content runs as ads on the brand's account, on Meta/TikTok ad platforms, even on out-of-home billboards. Pricing scales with channel, exclusivity, geography and duration.

| Right | 30 days | 90 days | 1 year | Perpetual |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Organic social only | Included | +15% | +40% | +80% |
| Paid social (whitelisting) | +50% | +100% | +200% | +350% |
| All digital (web/email/paid) | +80% | +150% | +300% | +500% |
| All channels (incl. OOH/TV) | +150% | +250% | +500% | Custom |
| Exclusivity in category | +25% | +50% | +100% | Custom |
Why it matters for creators
Usage rights are the easiest upsell in a creator's quote. A $500 UGC video can become a $2,000 deliverable just by adding 90 days of paid social usage. Failing to scope it costs creators 30–60% of every brand deal.

Negotiation checklist before signing usage
Every yes/no decision a creator should make before signing the rights clause.
- Is the channel limited to social, or 'all media'?
- Is the territory clearly defined? 'Global' costs more.
- Is there an end date? 'Perpetual' = forever. Price accordingly.
- Is exclusivity included? Which competitors are excluded?
- Can you reuse the content for your portfolio after the term?
Common mistakes
- Saying yes to 'we'd like to run this as an ad' without re-quoting.
- Assuming organic posting = usage rights. It's not.
- Granting perpetual rights to save a small deal — you lose 10× later.
- Forgetting exclusivity, then booking a direct competitor next month.
