What is engagement rate (and why brands obsess over it)

Engagement rate (ER) is the percentage of your audience that actively interacts with your content. It's the single most important quality signal on every social platform — brands use it to decide whether your followers are real, your audience is attentive, and your rate card is justified. A 50K creator with 5% ER will out-earn a 500K creator with 0.5% ER on almost every campaign in 2026.

The engagement rate formula

The most common formula — and the one this calculator uses — is:

ER% = ((likes + comments) ÷ followers) × 100

For a more accurate per-post number, swap followers for reach (the unique accounts that actually saw the post). On TikTok and Reels, add shares and saves to the numerator — they're a stronger trust signal than likes and the algorithm weights them heavily.

Average engagement rate by platform (2026)

TikTok<3%5%8%15%+
YouTube<1%2%4%7%+
X / Twitter<0.2%0.5%1%2%+
Twitch<1.5%3%5%10%+

Nano and micro creators (under 100K followers) almost always sit above platform average — that's exactly why brands now run multi-creator activations instead of one mega deal.

How to increase your engagement rate

  • Post less, post better. Cutting your posting frequency by 30% often raises ER more than any caption hack.
  • Open with a hook. First 1.5 seconds on TikTok / Reels and the first line of an IG caption decide everything.
  • Ask one specific question. "Which of these would you pick?" beats "What do you think?" by 3–5×.
  • Reply in the first hour. Comments → replies → re-comments is the loop the algorithm rewards most.
  • Cull inactive followers. A clean 20K audience beats a bloated 80K every single time.
  • Lean into shares & saves. On TikTok, Reels and Shorts, shares are worth ~5× a like to the algorithm.

Engagement rate and brand-deal pricing

Once you know your ER, plug it into the creator rate calculator to see what a sponsored post is actually worth. Above-average ER unlocks a 20–50% premium on the calculator's mid-range. If you're sitting at 2× the platform baseline, don't be shy — that's the single strongest negotiation lever you have.
