What is Click-Through Rate (CTR)?
Click-through rate (CTR) measures the share of impressions that turned into clicks: CTR = clicks ÷ impressions × 100. It applies everywhere — ads, search results, emails, link-in-bio, video end-screens. A high CTR means your headline, thumbnail, copy or offer is resonating with the audience seeing it. A low CTR means the audience is wrong, or the message isn't compelling enough to interrupt scroll. Creators obsess over CTR because doubling it doubles downstream conversions without paying for more reach.
Why it matters for creators
CTR is the cheapest lever in marketing. Adding traffic costs time or money — improving CTR costs only iteration. A 1% → 3% CTR on a link-in-bio means 3× more email subscribers from the same followers.
How it works
- 1Track impressions (how many saw it) and clicks (how many tapped).
- 2Calculate clicks ÷ impressions × 100.
- 3Compare to platform benchmarks to see if you're under/over.
- 4Iterate on the surface (thumbnail, headline, button copy) first.
- 5Then iterate on targeting — wrong audience can't be saved by copy.
Examples
- 1,000 impressions, 30 clicks = 3% CTR.
- YouTube thumbnail: 4% CTR is healthy, 10%+ is exceptional.
- Google search result: top spot averages 27% CTR.
- Email: industry avg 2–3%, creator newsletters often 5–15%.
Common mistakes
- Comparing CTR across platforms (totally different baselines).
- Optimizing CTR while ignoring conversion (clickbait trap).
- Judging a test with <500 impressions per variant.
- Ignoring mobile vs desktop CTR splits.
Creator use cases
YouTubers
Test 3 thumbnails per video — higher CTR drives the algorithm.
Newsletter writers
A/B test subject lines weekly — top quartile open rate compounds to subs.
Affiliate creators
Test in-content link CTR to find best-performing recommendation slots.
